The name Turquoise comes from the word "turques," meaning "Turks," as the mineral first reached Europe through Turkey.

Turquoise can often be seen adorning the crowns and jewellery of famous rulers. As a decorative mineral it was known in ancient Egypt, among the Aztecs, in Persia, and across other great dynasties. One of its most celebrated uses was in the burial mask of the pharaoh Tutankhamun.

It was once believed that Turquoise would change colour in step with changes in the health of the person wearing it. People also believed it would protect against the ill intentions of others — human or otherwise.

What all the civilisations that regularly used Turquoise had in common was a shared belief that it brings good fortune. It was the "sacred stone" of every civilisation that treasured it.
