Rhodochrosite — this gentle pink mineral — is a manganese carbonate mineral and the national symbol of Argentina, where the finest specimens are found.

It is often confused with rhodonite, though rhodochrosite is considerably softer than its kindred stone.

Rhodochrosite often presents in reddish-brown tones, while the finest specimens are a delicate rose pink.

It was first discovered in silver mines in Romania, and since then a larger deposit has been found in Argentina.

It is primarily used as a manganese ore — which means, among other things, that rhodochrosite is one of the key ingredients in the production of stainless steel. The more beautiful specimens, however, are today prized among crystal and mineral collectors.
