Onyx is a distinctive variety of the mineral Chalcedony. It is found in a range of colours, though the most common is black with white banding.

It has been in use for a very long time and was already extraordinarily popular among the ancient Egyptians, who used it to craft bowls and other functional objects. The Romans also wore this special mineral — they believed it would instil in them the courage needed to succeed in battle.
