An old legend holds that the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, were long imprisoned in the rocks along the coast of Labrador in Canada. One day, an Inuit warrior came along, spotted the trapped lights, and struck the rock with his spear. This act freed the Northern Lights — though some of that light and energy remained in the stones forever.

Labradorite later took its very name from that same coastline.
