One of the most well-known legends of Labradorite tells the story of the beautiful colours "captured" within the stone. An ancient legend holds that the Northern Lights — the Aurora Borealis — were long ago trapped in the rocks along the coast of Labrador in Canada. One day, an Inuit warrior came upon these rocks, saw the imprisoned lights, and struck the stone with his spear. This act freed the Northern Lights, though some of their light and energy remained within the stones forever.

It was from this very coastline that the stone received its name.
