Petrified Wood or "Fairy Wood" is permineralized fossilized wood that is over 200 million years old. Over the years, the organic material of the wood was replaced by silicates (quartz), which in some areas micro-crystallized, giving petrified wood its distinctive shimmering and magical appearance.

The fallen tree was first covered by sediment (mud, sand, or volcanic ash), which protected it and prevented the activity of bacteria that would otherwise have decomposed it. Over time, the wood was permeated by mineral-rich groundwater. These minerals gradually filled the pores of the wood and replaced the organic material, causing the wood to turn to stone while preserving its structure and appearance.
