Heliotrope, known as Bloodstone, is a cryptocrystalline mixture of Quartz or Jasper, often appearing as jasper or sometimes chalcedony. In Bloodstone's case, this manifests as dark green jasper with red inclusions of hematite.

The red inclusions resemble drops of blood, hence the name Bloodstone.

Heliotrope's history is rich and extensive. Albertus Magnus called it the "stone of Babylon" and attributed magical properties to it.

Pliny the Elder mentioned several times that the first "sorcerers" used it as a stone of invisibility.

Damigeron wrote that this mineral could summon rain, and believed it held special powers in divination and preserving youth.

Christian tradition says the red spots were formed during Christ's crucifixion, while Romans believed the mineral could stop bleeding.

There are numerous such examples and traditions associated with Bloodstone, and this mineral remains extremely popular today.
