Heliotrope, also known as Bloodstone, is a cryptocrystalline mixture of Quartz — sometimes appearing as jasper or occasionally chalcedony. In the case of Bloodstone, this manifests as a deep green jasper with red inclusions of hematite.

The red inclusions are reminiscent of drops of blood, which is how this mineral came to be known as Bloodstone.

The history of Heliotrope is rich and far-reaching. Albertus Magnus called it the "stone of Babylon" and attributed magical properties to it.

Pliny the Elder noted on several occasions that the first "sorcerers" used it as a stone of invisibility.

Damigeron wrote that this mineral could summon rain, and also believed it held special powers for divination and for preserving youth.

Christian tradition holds that the red specks appeared at the crucifixion of Jesus, while the Romans believed the mineral could stop bleeding.

There are countless such stories and traditions connected to Bloodstone — and this mineral remains just as beloved today.
