Amethyst is a beautiful purple variety of the widely known Quartz crystal. Its purple colour is formed through natural irradiation, traces of iron and titanium, or the presence of other elements.

Its name derives from the Greek αμεθυστoς (amethystos). The Greeks believed that the stone protected its wearer from intoxication caused by drinking wine. Today, however, we use it for entirely different purposes.
