Amethyst is a beautiful purple variety of the common Quartz crystal. Its violet color occurs due to natural irradiation, iron and titanium impurities, or the presence of other elements.

Its name comes from the Greek αμεθυστoς (amethystos). The Greeks believed that the stone protected its bearer from drunkenness caused by wine. Today, however, we use it for entirely different purposes.
