Agate is a wonderful mineral and semi-precious stone that comes in countless colours and patterns.

Agate was first discovered in the river Achates, from which it also takes its name. Even then, thousands of years ago, our ancestors recognised the unique quality of this exceptional stone and began shaping it into magical amulets.

Later, in the second half of the 18th century, the craft of working with agate grew even further, as its special qualities led to it being set into silver jewellery.

An agatised shell is a remarkable geological specimen that forms when a shell is completely replaced by agate.
